Choice Change

Due to the AQA specification we were unable to use the song 'Piece of Mind'. We decided to go with one of our possible choices which was 'better in Time'.

Treatments

A treatment is a short outline of a media production designed to give a client or production team an overview of what the production might include based on a brief. They are written descriptions but can also include sketches, mock ups, images and other draft items designed to demonstrate the intention of a production. Treatments are often used to sell an idea to a client. There is no hard and fast way to produce a treatment, although it is an integral aspect of the preproduction process.

mood board explanation

As we are choosing to go with the modern twist on an RnB song these pictures help create a good visual to help us. each picture is something that our group will try and include in the music video. We are currently thinking of having light hearted shots at either a fairground or an arcade.

Final choice

Kehlani - Piece of mind

We finally decided that the message behind most RnB songs was good and exactly what we wanted but the songs themselves were way too mainstream. Both the song and the singers were very popular and well known, which would’ve resulted in our final piece being compared. This song is an appropriate choice for us as the artist is a virtually new and unknown by many people. The song is also from her album and has no music video, inspiring original thoughts and ideas as we have no influence from a current music video. The message behind the song also relates to girls and teenagers today, telling them to move on and live your life without regrets or holding onto memories. Although we aren’t going with and old RnB song we plan to refer to them a lot and create a modern twist on RnB as we know it.

Tryna forget all of the messages
Tryna forget all of the stressin'
'Cause damn it was (such a pain)
Tryna forget all of the secondary
Feelings I had, man, it was fuckin' scary
Tryna get back to all my old ways
Tryna get back to all the hobbies from my old days
(Gettin' back)
Tryna forget all the unnecessary
Thoughts from my head, man, it was pretty scary

At least I learned a thing or two (yeah)
About me and you (yeah)
What we went through (yeah)
It made me who I am, I am, I am
I can feel again
Won't be numb again (numb)
At least I didn't mess it up (yeah)
That was all your touch (yeah)
I don't miss it much (yeah)
But it made me who I am, I am, I am
I can feel again
Won't be dumb again (dumb)

Said I'm tryna break off a piece of mind
A piece of mind that I can't get right
(I can't get right)
Said I'm tryna break off a piece of mind
A piece of mind, my heart's on my side
(My heart is on my side)

You said yourself you made me who I am
You told me that after you I would never love again (Didn't I?)
Oh you made sure that I would lose myself
So I wanna see I need no one else
Just tell me that I was worth a million smiles, and...
Tell me that I was worth a million miles, and...
Tryna make sure that I forget the times that
You made me think that I just couldn't shine, yeah

At least I learned a thing or two (yeah)
About me and you (yeah)
What we went through (yeah)
It made me who I am, I am, I am
I can feel again
Won't be numb again (numb)
At least I didn't mess it up (yeah)
That was all your touch (yeah)
I don't miss it much (yeah)
But it made me who I am, I am, I am
I can feel again
Won't be dumb again (dumb)

Said I'm tryna break off a piece of mind
A piece of mind that I can't get right
(I can't get right)
Said I'm tryna break off a piece of mind
A piece of mind, my heart's on my side
(My heart is on my side)

On my side, yeah
On my side, yeah
Gotta get a little piece of mind
Gotta make sure that it feels just right
Gotta make sure that I make it last this time

Said I'm tryna break off a piece of mind
(I'm tryna break off)
A piece of mind that I can't get right
(Boy that I can't get right)
Said I'm tryna break off a piece of mind
(A piece of mind)
A piece of mind, my heart's on my side
(My heart is on my side
My heart's on my side, yeah, yeah)

Da, da, da, da
(Da)
Da, da, da, da
Yeah
Da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da

Leona Lewis - Better in time

This song was an extremely strong choice due to the influential lyrics and we had worked out some camera movements for it. However, the main thing that made us rethink was how mainstream the song was. Our aim was to find a song that wasn’t too mainstream so we could think of some original ideas for it

Jennifer Lopez - all i have

Once again, these lyrics were very empowering towards women but there were too many complications for this song choice. On being that we would have to find a male partner willing enough to sing in our music video. We could substitute it with a girl but it wouldn’t have the RnB feel that we are aspiring for. Also, the song to well-known and our music video would be compared to the original which is what we are trying to avoid

Jazmine Sullivan - Masterpiece

The lyrics in this video have a significant meaning behind them which made it one of our choices. The message behind it creates a positive image for women suggesting that they are ‘a work of art.’ There is also no music video for this piece which would spark some original ideas as we would have no influence. However, the lyrics are quiet fast which could be a struggle for our actor.

Genre Choice

We chose RnB as our genre. Alt of songs in this genre tend to have very meaningful lyrics which would help us create a narrative based music video. Most of the lyrics would follow the topic of love, however we have hopefully thought of an idea that will represent the lyric is a way that challenges the conventions. The locations for most RnB singles seem to be in very simple areas which we will try to mimic but with an added 21st century twist to it.

Film Opening vs Music Video

From our prelim, it is clearly evident that we will be spending a lot more time filming an editing our music video compared to our movie opening. In general filming, a music video requires time and a lot of retaking shots. As each second must match the beat of the song we must be stricter on the quality of our shots. The camerawork is for a music video is a lot faster and consists of small 2 sec shots which is a change from our film opening. This means that we will have to dedicate more time to filming and to ensure that each shot is perfect as it will be prolonged process for a reshoot. The basic camera movements that may have been used in our film openings will have to become more unique to make a music video stand out.

Final Prelim

Eric Nam - DREAM

I came across this music video and I really like the style of it. I have never seen a music video using this medium before and I thought that it really matched the ballad genre. Although there are no visuals just drawing, I feel like it has the same effect that a real-life visual would have.

Prelim Preperation

We focused a lot on the mise en scene of our prelim. We created a jukebox out of cardboard to mimic the one in the video. The details were drawn on with black sharpie. The costumes for our 2 actors were also kept like the original video with clothing items such as a flannel shirt, grey jumper and a white cap. We also had 3 various locations, bush hill park for the graffiti wall, town park for the field and Raleigh road.

Prelim storyboard

Here is the storyboard for our prelim. As u can see it features many locations which allowed us to be more creative and try something new out. The camera shots were also different to that of what we would usually film so it tested our skills a lot.

Prelim Choice

For the prelim, my group chose to interpret ‘Down with The Trumpets’ by Rizzle Kicks. They chose this music video as it was fun and chirpy and something different to practice many skills. Also, the video contained some lip syncing which may be useful in future filming for our music video so practicing now would benefit us a lot. There was also quite a lot of moving shots so we would get to test our camera work which differed from our movie where there were a lot of still shots.

Mabel ft. kojo funds - Finders Keepers

I chose this song as it has recently become quite popular. I think the shots of the female visual are also quite interesting as they are only really of the top half of her body and never focus on below her shoulder line. Only during the dancing do we get more full body shots. However, I think this is a good video to show editing to the beat.

Park Jimin - serendipity

In general, I like the whole theme of this music video. Although it is not in English the video itself has a lot of interesting aspects to it. I especially like the colour palette that has been used and the contrast between them. They yellow and the blue both stand out as small parts here and there feature the colour.

Queen - Dont Stop Me now

I chose this video to represent rock as it follows many conventions. I liked the close of the instruments a lot and thought that they related to the genre well. the lighting also played a key role which I liked since some moments the light was specifically placed on the visuals whereas at others it was on their instruments.

Andrew Goodwins Theory

Andrew Goodwin’s Theory
Queen – Don’t Stop Me Now
Park jimin –  love yourself
Mabel – finders keepers
Genre characteristics: style and iconography (e.g. stage performance in a metal video)
With queen being a rock band, they have followed various conventions such as stage performances and many close-up shots of the instruments that they heavily rely on. It can also be mentioned that the lowkey lighting is also useful
It follows conventions of a pop ballad with high key lighting and a typical theme of love, an emotional topic. The mise en scene also relates to the atmosphere of the visual.
With it being a heavily dance based music video most of the camera time is of people dancing. There is also a lot of lowkey lighting
Relationship between lyrics and visuals with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics
The visuals related to some aspect as when they were relating to themselves they would have a clip of them singing whereas the rest would be of the instruments
There are many moments that each of these relate as the colour of the music video changes as specific colours are mentioned.
Most of the lyrics relate to the action being performed by the visual, amplifying the lyrics.
A relationship between the music and visuals, e.g. editing to the beat
As the video didn’t contain a lot of editing the shots of the instruments would always significantly be on a main beat
There is a lot of editing to the beat. Not only is the editing on beat but each action made by the visual also matches the beat
As it is heavily danced based the dancing is done on beat as well as the editing
Multiple close shots of the artists to create visual style a ‘star image’ to sell the artist
There were many shots of the main vocalist whilst the others were only of the band members instruments
There is multiple close shots of the visual which would sell to the target audience
Multiple close shots of the visual, with a very light background sell the image of a ‘star’ making them stand out more
A frequent reference to notion of looking (screens within screens and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body)

There are moments when the viewer is looking through a telescope at the visual. This is to represent the audience as the figurative ‘girl’ in the video
As the main visual is female, there is an extremely voyeuristic treatment being made. This includes the obvious outfit and style of dancing
Inter textual references to other media texts may be present

There is a shot where another person is taking a picture toward s the camera or at the audience. This camera appears throughout the video
